JessicaA little bio

Born and raised on the East Coast of the U.S., I was always most engaged when in the outdoors. Forever clumsy, uncoordinated, and scared of getting hurt, I had trouble realizing my full potential as a child. After playing some sports and meeting athletic people in college, I realized I had the power to transform how my body worked for me.

Through yoga, hiking, rock climbing, and active transportation I have changed both my physical strength and my outlook on life. I now believe that anything is possible with dedication, humility, and a passion for learning.

My life is dedicated to improving health and fitness: both my own and others. I taught high school science, health and physical education for 8 years. I have since shifted my focus to teach others how to improve their lifestyles to feel stronger and more agile. I have been teaching movement classes at the SHOP in Corvallis and in several area parks and playgrounds. I also train clients individually or in small groups, either in the gym or in clients’ homes. Now I am opening up my own new space in Bend, where I will be able to accommodate individuals and small groups in a unique setting. I strive to empower people to take their health into their own hands or take their game to the next level.

I truly enjoy teaching beginners and people who are coming back from injury, but I am comfortable working with students of all levels.

Training and credentials

I am an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer. ACSM sets the standard for evidence-based practice. I keep up on the latest techniques and research and I am well-grounded in fitness fundamentals. Beyond that, I seek out coaches and teachers who share my philosophy about approaching movement training as a practice that provides a foundation for all the fun things we choose to do in life.

Currently, I am in year one of Nutritious Movement training with Katy Bowman. Most recently I have earned a certification through Precision Nutrition. As a level 1 coach I have the skills to help guide clients through a transformation of nutrition and exercise that does not involve counting calories and create change that will last a lifetime.

I am also MovNat certified. I attended an incredible workshop in Paris that helped me develop my movement skills and ability to coach those skills in others. The next year I earned a level 2 trainer certification. You can learn more about MovNat on their website. These principles guide much of what my clients do, from learning to roll and crawl to lifting and carrying weights of all shapes and sizes.

I am also trained in using the Functional Movement Screen. The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a tool that helps identify faulty movement patterns and gives a baseline for introducing corrective exercise and making movement more efficient and balanced.

I teach people of all ages, levels, and interests. They all share a desire to create change in their bodies to help them live a more active lifestyle. Together we learn how to explore our world and see movement opportunities where most other people see none. Some of the best feedback I hear from my clients includes stories of climbing up on kitchen countertops, hopping from rock to rock while walking the dog, and feeling how easy filling the water cooler had become after training with me. In groups, we scale walls, swing across monkey bars, complete mud runs, and climb mountains. We find ways to get out and enjoy the natural world on the most beautiful of summer evenings and the most challenging winter days.

team chepenefaWhen I have some spare time I chronicle my outdoor adventures in words and photos. I also enjoy planning class series that teach students how to be physically and mentally prepared for the challenges of mountaineering, hiking and snowshoeing. This year, I’ve taken several groups out on adventures in partnership with Cascadia Expeditions, including stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and rock climbing. With so much ground to explore in Bend, we’re just getting started seeing what’s possible.

If you’re ready to be more awesome and feel capable of doing more with your body, let’s talk.
